About Red Gum
Red Gum - Eucalyptus camaldulensis is a very dense and durable timber grown mainly along the length of the Murray River on the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Due to its great strength it has historically been used primarily for railway sleepers and structural timbers.
In recent times however, the beauty of this magnificent timber has become a focal point with the demand for kiln dried Red Gum for inclusion in high class fine furniture and cabinetry increasing dramatically. The Red Gum forest available for harvesting covers a vast area an area along the major river systems of Eastern Australia. These forests have been meticulously managed and have been supplying timber, and firewood to Australian towns and cities for over 200 years.
Red Gum is category 2 rated, which means it has a very high resistance to rot and pests.
Red Gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis*
1. A medium to large hardwood found adjacent to most of the inland rivers in mainland Australia. It is a unique eucalypt in that it can stand quite long periods of flooding, and indeed such inundations play a very important role in the maintenance of river red gum forests. Because of its occurrence as an open woodland stand, trees tend to spread rather than form a long trunk so the length of the millable log is usually small.
2. The heartwood is reddish brown. Sapwood to 40mm wide, distinctly paler. Texture relatively fine and even. Grain usually interlocked, often producing an attractive ripple or fiddleback figure. Gum veins common.
3. GD about 1130kg/m3; ADD about 900kg/m3
