History
The Rowe family began harvesting and milling Red Gum when brothers CL and AB Rowe started their operations at Wal Wal near Stawell, Victoria in 1906. They supplied many of the timber pavers that formed the roads in CBD of Melbourne, in fact some of these pavers exist beneath the road today. The mill site shifted to various locations around the Wimmera district, until a permanent mill site was built in Hamilton, Victoria in 1952 by ML and LW Rowe, sons of CL Rowe.
Proprietor of The Bonum Sawmills, Gavin Rowe, is the son of ML Rowe, continuing as the third generation of the family in the sawmilling business.
Gavin and his family now operate the multifaceted divisions of Rowe’s Timber Industries at Barham in NSW after moving here from Hamilton in western Victoria in 1975.
Decades ago it was the vision of Mr Malcolm Rowe and son Gavin to maximise the realisable potential of each and every sawlog harvested. Today after many hours of research and experience in the industry and millions of dollars in capital invested The Bonum Sawmills continues to implement and reap the benefits of their foresight.
In 2004 the latest equipment in veneer slicing began operation to further value add to this beautiful and unique timber.
The Bonum Sawmills believes it essential to the industry to have the latest in technology both in the sawmill and the forest. Our harvesting is carried out by a Komatsu PC300 fitted with a Unicon felling head By utilising this machinery wastage and damage is minimum, safety and recovery – maximum.
